Monday/April 7th

Test: Students to hand in [Chapter 8/Part I ]-“Take Home” Essay question and complete in class [Chapter 8/Part II ]-“Sensation and Perception” Multiple Choice Test.

Alternate Instructional Method(s): Video Presentation #12 “Discovering Psychology” Video Resource. “Motivation and Emotion” This program reviews what researchers are discovering about why we act and feel as we do, from the exhilaration of love to the agony of failure. With Dr. Norman Adler of Yeshiva University and Dr. Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania.

Class Discussion/Analysis: Review of essential points outlined in the 30-minute video presentation.

Homework Assignment (to be completed): Guided Reading Activity 12-1 “Theories of Motivation.” Caption response 12.1 on page 315 “Harlow’s Monkeys” and 12.2 on page 317 “Incentive to Win.” Application Activity #5 on page 317. [Homework assignments worth 30 pts. total pts. value].

                                                     Quick Lab Exercise

 “How do advertisements “motivate” people to buy products?  Students should select (4) different products representing the Instinct Theory/Drive-Reduction Theory/Incentive Theory/Cognitive Theory (one product advertisement per theory). Answer the analysis questions on handout page for each product selected [two products per page] *Due on Monday 4/14 [+50 pts. total value].

 

 

Tuesday/April 8th

Main Idea: [Section 12-1] Psychologists explain motivation and why we experience it in different ways through instinct, drive-reduction, incentive, and cognitive theories of motivation.

Section Objectives: [Section 12-1] “Theories of Motivation” #1. Describe four theories of motivation. #2. Discuss the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Teacher Directed Instruction: Teachers presentation of materials on “Theories of Motivation.”

Alternate Instructional Method(s): Daily Focus Transparency 12-1 “Motivation Theories.”

Class Discussion/Analysis: Students to answer the questions pertaining to 12-1 Daily Focus Activity. Students to read “Exploring Psychology” feature on page 313 and answer teacher directed questions.

Focus: Our concerns and future aspirations give us motivation to take action. They may also be the things in which we invest the greatest emotion. Students to explore their own goals and aspirations. Class analysis in regards to what in general motivates teenagers and what in particular motivates their own actions.

Quiz: Section 12-1 “Theories of Motivation.” [5 vocabulary matching/5 multiple choice]. +30 pts. total value.

Main Idea: [Section 12-2] Much of life is spent trying to satisfy biological and social needs. Biological needs are physiological requirements that we must fulfill to survive, whereas social needs are those that are learned through experience.

Section Objectives: [Section 12-2] #1. Describe the biological and social needs of humans. #2. Explain Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

Teacher Directed Instruction: Initiate discussion and analysis pertaining to materials in section 2 materials “Biological and Social Motives.”

Alternate Instructional Method(s): Daily Focus Transparency 12-2 “Biological and Social Motives.”

Class Discussion/Analysis: Students to answer the questions pertaining to 12-2 Daily Focus Activity. Students to read “Exploring Psychology” feature on page 319 and answer teacher directed questions.

Focus: Have students create a hierarchy of needs and their definitions pertaining to the function of the hypothalamus and the corresponding connection between the physiological and social experience.
