Introduction to Art I
Sketchbook Assignments - List 1

Due Date Media Assignment
1/7 Use Color Attach a commemorative stamp to an envelope.  The stamp and the envelope may be of any size that the post office will deliver.  Address the envelope in the center of the front and put your name only in the top left corner.  Write large enough to be easily read, but small enough that you have room for the assignment.  Decorate the envelope using the theme of the stamp.  Decorate both front and back.  For example, if the stamp is a flag decorate with a patriotic theme.  DO NOT COPY THE STAMP.  Your decoration must be original.  Mail the envelope to school.  Alleman High School  1103 40th Street  Rock Island, IL  61201  attn: Mr. Elsner
1/14 Use Pencil Draw a hand tool such as a hammer, screwdriver or plier.  Draw very large.  Fill the entire page with your drawing of the tool.  Try to show all of the details of the tool.  Add some shading so that we can see the shadows and the light on the tool.  If there are textures on the tool, show those as well.
1/22 Use Pencil Draw a hat.  Pick a hat that you can look at while you draw.  Don't forget to add shadows and the highlights you see on the hat.  These are called value.  Value is important if we want to believe the hat is three dimensional.  Now that your hat is drawn, add something to it that takes up space.  Don't just put a patch on it.  Add something like a pond with a fisherman sitting next to it.  Have fun with your imagination.
1/28 Use Color Draw a plant.  Really look at this one while you draw.  The leaves are not all the same size.  They do not all bend the same way.  Some are in front of others.  Don't draw from what you imagine the plant looks like.  If you don't have a real plant at home, find a picture of one to draw from.  Use light and bright colors for the highlights and dark colors for the shadows.  Add a table by drawing a line from both sides of the pot to the sides of the paper.
2/4 Use Color Draw a costume for a play or the circus or a movie.  Make the style fit a theme or a time (like outer space of the 1950's).  Try to be original.  Don't just copy what you have seen in the movies or on television.  Use lighter colors for highlights and darker colors for shadows.  This assignment is just for fun.  Let your imagination really fly.
2/11 Use Pencil Fill a clear glass about half full with water.  Put a spoon or a fork in the glass.  Now look at it.  What do you see?  The top of the glass, the top of the water, and the bottom of the glass should all be ovals.  The spoon or fork should be distorted by the water.  Is the fork bigger or smaller or just moved to the side a bit?  Even clear things have shadows and highlights.  Look for them and add value as needed.  Don't forget the table.
2/21 Use Ink Draw your television set.  Draw it lightly in pencil first.  Don't shade yet.  Now draw it in ink right over the top of the pencil.  Erase the pencil completely now.  So shade in ink, you may use lines evenly spaced or drawn first one direction and then another.  You may use dots of ink that look darker if they are close together and lighter if they are farther apart.  You can use short quick marks or long deliberate marks.  You can even fill some areas completely with the ink.  Experiment on another piece of paper before you decide which ink marks you want to use on your drawing of the television set.
2/25 Use Pencil Pick a small object up with your hand.  Let it rest in your hand naturally.  If you can't see the object, pick up something a little bigger.  Now draw your hand and the object your are holding.  Don't forget the values.  Really look at your hand.  What do you see?  There are creases and folds in the skin.  The nails are not on the surface but recessed a little bit.  Find all the other little details too.
