Introduction to Art II
Sketchbook Assignments - List 1

Due Date Media Assignment
1/7 Use Pencil and Ink Divide the page of your sketchbook in half.  Each of the two drawings for this assignment will be on separate halves of the page.  Find a watch or piece of jewelry you think has interesting shapes.  Draw that piece of jewelry using pencil on the first half of the page.  Remember to use what you learned about value and perspective from Art I.  Find the bright highlights.  Find the shadows.  Now pick one detail of the piece of jewelry.  Look for a detail that makes the jewelry interesting or unique.  Draw that very large to fit the second half of the page.  Draw lightly.  Now go over your lines with ink.  Erase all of the pencil under the ink.  Add shading with ink.
1/14 Use Pencil Find a favorite old toy.  It should be something you played with for many hours.  Take an hour now to draw that toy in pencil on the page.  Fill the whole page.  Try to remember the fun you had with the toy while you draw.  Look for the little things like wear spots that have made your toy special to you.  Don't forget to add shading.
1/22 Use Pencil Take a pair of socks and hold them at shoulder height over your bed.  Drop them onto the bed.  The socks should have folds and be one on top of the other.  You should be able to see most of both socks.  If the socks land without folds, drop them again.  If they do not overlap a little, drop them again.  Now draw the socks.  Your values used in shading will make them real.  Draw them big.  Draw the surface of the bed for background.
1/28 Use Ink Draw a telephone.  Either pick a phone that has a base and a separate receiver or place another object close to the phone.  Draw the contours only.  Remember that contour means OUTLINES and no shading.  Draw lightly.  Now go over your lines with ink.  Erase all of the pencil under the ink.  Now look for the highlights.  Outline the bright areas on the phone.  In the background create a small area of texture no larger than one inch square.  Repeat this small texture until the entire background is filled.
2/4 Use Ink This week you will illustrate breakfast.  Arrange a cereal box, a bowl, a glass and a spoon on a table.  Make sure some of the objects are in front of others.  Draw the outlines of the objects lightly in pencil.  Draw over the pencil with ink then erase the pencil.  DO NOT SHADE.  Add a texture for background.  How is this different from the drawing of the books?  Drawing outlines of things without shading is called CONTOUR.
2/11 Use Pencil Draw a tennis shoe.  Be accurate.  Don't draw mechanically, instead look for details.  The laces are on top of the shoe, not painted on.  The different parts are stitched together.  Or, the parts of the shoe fit inside of or on top of other parts.  Each of these parts have their own shape and can be drawings by themselves.
2/21 Use Pencil Ink and Color Draw a large piece of furniture in pencil.  Pick a big couch or stuffed chair or recliner.  Draw lightly and contour only to start.  Pay attention to perspective.  Pick one part of the furniture (like a leg or cushion or arm) and draw that in ink over the top of your pencil.  Erase the pencil for that part.  Now add the shading.  Shade the pencil areas in pencil.  Shade the ink part in ink.  Now complete your picture by adding a texture in the background using color.
2/25 Use Color Design a cover for a new CD by your favorite band.  What is usually on the cover of a CD?  If the band has a special way it's name is drawn be sure to copy that.  The cover should reflect the style of music the artist or group plays.  (Remember: since I am the "buying public" for this CD, the cover should not offend me.)
