Placement in courses offered through this department is based on guidance counselor references, teacher recommendations and student/parent request. Course selection must be in compliance with designated course sequence with one semester of a computer course required. Students will use PC computers.  Since all courses will use Internet access, students must have a signed "Acceptable Use Policy" on file in the Main Office.

601       COMPUTER APPLICATIONS I
1/2 Credit      No Prerequisite
One Semester      Grade 9, 10, 11, 12

Working with a computer is an important part of today's world. This is an introductory course for students interested in becoming computer literate. This course is designed to allow the beginning computer user to be familiar with the history of computers, computer hardware, computer software, and current trends in the computer industry. The student will be introduced to applications which will meet the present and future needs of most students. The students will use current software to learn keyboarding and word processing. Students will create a portfolio using Office XP in a Windows XP environment.

605       COMPUTER APPLICATIONS II
1/2 Credit      Prerequisite: Computer Applications I with a minimum grade of C
One Semester       Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This course follows Computer Applications.  Advanced functions of the computer, word processor, data base, and spreadsheet will be explored.  The student will see how these can be integrated to print out personalized form letters and reports. Students will be required to create a portfolio following the guidelines provided by instructor.  Students will do simulations integrating word processing and spreadsheet.  Students will be required to produce a written and oral report on an approved technology topic.  Presentation reports require that students provide visual aids such as: handouts, overheads, poster board or model. Students will learn how to create computer generated slides using PowerPoint.  Students will gain experience in word processing, database, spreadsheets and slide presentations using Office XP in a Windows XP environment.

607       DESKTOP PUBLISHING
1/2 Credit      Prerequisite: Computer Applications I or equivalent with a minimum
                                        grade of C
One Semester       Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This course will utilize the personal computer to produce professional looking publications.  Students will have "hands on" computer experience using PageMaker 6.5 and Microsoft Publisher 2002.  Printed publications will look the same as what appears on the computer layout.  Students will learn general design concepts and the process of developing a publication from sketches to repress techniques.  Students will create a magazine.

610       COMPUTER PROGRAMMING (2008-2009)

One Semester       Grade 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Computer Applications I & II with a minimum grade of "C", successful completion of Algebra I and/or approval of instructor.

This course investigates the uses and limitations of computers in various fields. The students learn DOS Basics and Visual Basics programming language and how to write programs. Topics covered include flow charting, tracing, assigning variables, and computer functions. The students learn to control data and output using "IF..THEN.." statements, loops and subscript variables. The use of string variables will be introduced. Students will learn the basics of HTML Web Language.

612       WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT (2009-2010)

One Semester       Grade 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Computer Applications II with a minimum grade of "C" and approval of instructor.

Students will learn to develop a Web page from planning to publication using HTML and Microsoft FrontPage 2002, a Web authoring software program.  Students will learn the Internet, networks, network services, Web browsers, Website services, and purpose, Website design, sound, color, graphics, animation, tables, forms and frames.
