ART DEPARTMENT

714      ART 1
1/2 Credit       Elective
One Semester       Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This course provides a background of essential art studies. In Art I students will focus on drawing and painting techniques, composition, perspective, acrylic and colored pencil. In addition to the 'in class' work, all students will be required to complete a weekly sketch book. Also to further expose students to the history of art, they must present an oral report over a topic selected with the assistance of the instructor. A lab fee is charged to help cover the cost of materials throughout the semester.

715      ART 2
1/2 Credit      Elective, Prerequisite: 714 Art 1
One Semester       Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This course continues the exploration of art into other media. Some areas which will be covered include ceramics, printmaking and sculpture. In addition to the 'in class' work, all students will be required to complete a weekly sketchbook. Also to further expose students to the history of art, they must present an oral report over a topic selected with the assistance of the instructor. A lab fee is charged to help cover the cost of materials throughout the semester.

721       DRAWING AND PAINTING STUDIO
1/2 Credit      Elective, Prerequisite: 714 Art 1
One Semester       Grades 10, 11, 12

This course covers the material and subject possibilities of drawing and painting. The emphasis is on composition, perspective and painting techniques. Students will have an opportunity to use a variety of media including; watercolor, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, and pen & ink. In addition to the `in class' work all students will be required to keep a a weekly sketchbook. A lab fee is charged to help cover the cost of material used throughout the semester.

722      CERAMICS STUDIO
1/2 Credit      Elective, Prerequisite: 715 Art 2
One Semester       Grades 10, 11, 12

The students in this class will explore the diverse possibilities of clay through slab, coil, pinch, and inverted drape hand-building techniques. Emphasis will be on the quality of construction and of the effectiveness of the ceramic design. Interested students will be taught wheel thrown skills in after school sessions arranged with the instructor. In addition to the `in class' work all students will be required to keep a a weekly sketchbook.  A lab fee is charged to help cover the cost of the materials used throughout the semester.

725      THREE DIMENSIONAL MATERIALS
1/2 Credit       Elective, Prerequisite: 715 Art 2
One Semester       Grades 10,11,12

Students will explore Three Dimensional Forms using a variety of media such as: clay, glass, plaster, metals, wax and wood. Project areas may include: jewelry, mold making for casting, sculpture (both additive and subtractive), and stained glass. In addition to the `in class' work all students will be required to keep a a weekly sketchbook.  A lab fee is charged to cover the costs of disposable materials. Additional costs may be incurred by students wishing to attempt more complex projects.

726      PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO
1/2 Credit       Elective, Prerequisite: 714 Art 1
One Semester       Grades 10, 11, 12

Photography Studio will build on the students' visual concepts of BALANCE and COMPOSITION. Everyone will learn to use a 35mm Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera, develop film and make prints. All darkroom work will be in black and white. Other topics covered include cropping and darkroom special effects. All students are responsible for providing their own camera, film and paper. A lab fee is charged to help cover the cost of chemicals and other consumable material used throughout the semester.
Cost: Lab fee: $25.00. Camera, film, paper as noted above.
 

731      ADVANCED STUDIO
1/2 Credit      Elective, Prerequisite: one course in the 720's
One Semester      Grades 11, 12

ADVANCED STUDIO is reserved for the serious art student. Each student will be allowed to explore an individual direction in an area of art where he/she has shown previous interest. Each student will be responsible for the planning and execution of four major projects within the chosen area of study. In addition to the `in class' work all students will be required to keep a a weekly sketchbook.  A lab fee will be charged to help cover the cost of materials used throughout the semester. This course may be repeated with the permission of the instructor and a counselor.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT

790       BAND
1/2 Credit      Elective
Fall Semester      Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

This course is designed for students with previous band experience. The purpose of the course is both the appreciation and performance of instrumental music. All types and styles of band music are explored. The fundamentals of music and music theory will be studied. The majority of performances are during non-school times (i.e. evenings and an occasional Saturday or Sunday).  Performance at Concerts and Pep Band functions is required and is a factor in calculating grades.
