414       FRENCH I
1 Credit      Elective
Full Year    Grades 9, 10, 11,12
First level French is an introduction to the language and culture of French-speaking people. French is spoken from the first day and emphasis is on developing pronunciation, intonation, and listening skills. The basic grammar structures and vocabulary are used and reinforced daily through oral drills and simple conversation. Repetition drills using tapes of native French speakers are used periodically to aid student's pronunciation and listening skills.  Students will also integrate Catholic values and attitudes by learning about Catholic religious holidays and practices in French speaking countries as well as learning various prayers in French.

424       FRENCH II
1 Credit       Elective, Prerequisite: successful completion of French I and
                                                   teacher  recommendation.
Full Year     Grades 10, 11, 12
This course reinforces and builds on those skills learned in French I. Refinement of pronunciation and intonation is expected. Repetition and response drills are used by the instructor as well as tapes of native speakers.  Students will also integrate Catholic values and attitudes by learning about Catholic religious holidays and practices in French speaking countries as well as learning various prayers in French.

434      FRENCH III (Honors)
1 Credit       Elective, Prerequisite: successful completion of French II and
                                                   teacher  recommendation.
Full Year     Grade 11, 12
The object of the third-level French course is to perfect the student's pronunciation and intonation while still introducing vocabulary and new idiomatic expressions. The students are expected to speak French with out much hesitation during class and make use of their knowledge of French grammar patterns. Various readings about French culture, as well as some short literature selections, are used for reading and comprehension practice and class discussions. Students demonstrate their writing ability with short paragraphs on various topics related to French-speaking people and their culture.  Students will also integrate Catholic values and attitudes by learning about Catholic religious holidays and practices in French speaking countries as well as learning various prayers in French.

444       FRENCH IV
1 Credit       Elective, Prerequisite: successful completion of French III and
                                                   teacher  recommendation.
Full Year     Grade 12
This advanced level of French is a practical study of the literature, art, music, history, and geography of France. The student has the opportunity to perfect speaking and writing abilities. The emphasis in this course is on lecture and class discussion of French culture through the ages beginning with the Roman period, up through today. Films, records, and tapes relating to French history and culture supplement the textbook. Also, much supplemental literature is read and discussed, including poetry, novel excerpts, short stories, and plays.  Students will also integrate Catholic values and attitudes by learning about Catholic religious holidays and practices in French speaking countries as well as learning various prayers in French.

454       SPANISH I

Full Year     Grades 9, 10, 11
Spanish I is an introduction to the study of the Spanish language and to the culture of the Spanish-speaking people. The emphasis is on the development of reading, writing, speaking and listening proficiency.  Acquisition of Spanish vocabulary is of high importance.  Catholic values and attitudes are integrated through praying in Spanish and discussing Catholic practices in Spanish-speaking countries.

464       SPANISH II
1 Credit      Elective, Prerequisite: successful completion of Spanish I and
                                                  teacher recommendation.
Full Year    Grades 10, 11, 12
In this course students will continue to explore the varied cultures of Spanish-speaking peoples.  Students will also continue to develop more complex reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.  A great emphasis of this course is vocabulary development and the acquisition of more complex grammatical structures.  Students will also integrate Catholic values and attitudes by learning about Catholic religious holidays and practices in Spanish-speaking countries, as well as learning various prayers in Spanish.

474       SPANISH III (Honors)
1 Credit      Elective, Prerequisite: successful completion of Spanish II and
                                                  teacher recommendation.
Full Year    Grades 11, 12
Spanish 3 (Honors) is intended for students who wish to develop their proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Critical thinking skills are required in this course of in-depth study of the Spanish language.  Students are expected to speak Spanish during class, compose essays in Spanish, read and comprehend supplemental literature, and give oral presentations.  Catholic values and attitudes are reinforced through the daily prayer recitation in Spanish and by continued study of Catholic religious influences and customs in Spanish-speaking countries.

484       SPANISH IV
1 Credit      Elective, Prerequisite: successful completion of Spanish III and
                                                  teacher recommendation.
Full Year       Grade 12
The goal of this course is to develop greater proficiency in reading, writing, speaking.  AP (Advanced Placement) simulated activities will be incorporated.  Students are expected to speak Spanish in class and will be asked to write compositions, essays and summaries.  Students will undergo an intensive grammar review to synthesize previously learned material.  Students will also read supplemental literature and watch a video series designed to increase Spanish language comprehension.  Catholic values and attitudes are reinforced through prayer recitation in Spanish and by continued study of Catholic religious customs in Spanish-speaking countries.
