Beginning with the 1994-95 school year, Alleman High School introduced the Religious Education Curriculum developed and mandated by Bishop John Myers, D.D., Bishop of Peoria.

All students in grades 10, 11 and 12 are required to have a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (approximate cost $10).

014      RELIGION IA: INTRODUCTION TO HIGH SCHOOL RELIGION
1/2 Credit      Required
One Semester      Grade 9
This course will introduce the scope and method of the study of religion for the high school student and explain the opportunities for spiritual growth and Christian service in the context of the particular school or parish. The remainder of the semester will be devoted to major themes of the Old Testament.
Text: Primer on Divine Revelation, Catechism of the Catholic Church, Bible: New American translation. It is advisable that this be a hardback edition. The Bible and catechism will be used all four years at Alleman.

015       RELIGION IB: NEW TESTAMENT/INTRODUCTION TO CHURCH HISTORY
1/2 Credit      Required
One Semester      Grade 9
The first part of this course will focus upon chastity education, presenting friendship, social life and chastity as keys to maturity in Christian love. This New Testament portion is designed to introduce the student to Jesus Christ through the study of the New Testament and the history of the Early Church.

024       RELIGION IIA: SACRAMENTS
1/2 Credit       Required
One Semester       Grade 10
This course will examine the basic understanding of sacramentality, and provide an advanced understanding of the seven Sacraments, so that the students may participate more fully in the celebration and reception of each Sacrament.

025       RELIGION IIB: FUNDAMENTAL MORALITY
1/2 Credit       Required
One Semester       Grade 10
This course will give the student the knowledge of how we are to live based on what we believe. It is not simply a litany of rules, but rather principles for living an upright life based on the idea that the human person is made in the image and likeness of God. Students will be offered the scriptural, theological, and philosophical principles which will enable them to make correct moral choices.

034      RELIGION IIIA: CHRISTIAN VOCATION
1/2 Credit       Required
One Semester      Grade 11
First semester will examine and help students appreciate and understand God's  call to each member of the Church. This course seeks not only to inform the student of various types of vocations within the Church, but also to awaken the desire to know one's personal vocation.  Topics covered include love, prayer and discernment, Catholic social teaching, career choice as ministry, time-management, and communication.  Students will examine the four Christian lifestyles: single life, consecrated religious life, ordained life, and married life.  Students will complete a career discernment project and a marriage project.

035      RELIGION IIIB: CHURCH HISTORY AND CULTURE
1/2 Credit      Required
One Semester       Grade 11
Second semester will examine the history of the Church from the Edict of Milan (313 A.D.) to the present. This course will stress the contribution of the Catholic faith to civilization, as seen variously in art, architecture, music, and the saints in an attempt to develop a better understanding of the movement of the Holy Spirit throughout church history. The course will take a thematic approach to understanding the impact that the past has on the present direction of the church.  Catholic social teaching will also be integrated into the course.  Students will complete an extensive semester research project on a selected topic.

044      RELIGION IVA: CATHOLIC DOCTRINE: APOLOGETICS
1/2 Credit      Required
One Semester       Grade 12
This course in Apologetics is divided into two parts. The first half is a Christian apologetic: Why believe in God and Christ? The second half is a Catholic apologetic: Why does the Roman Catholic Church teach as she does? The focus of the course throughout concerns itself with identifying our personal beliefs and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.  The intention of the course is to facilitate the student's ability to articulate the faith in a variety of ways; as both teacher and evangelist.

045      RELIGION IVB: ADVANCED MORALITY
1/2 Credit      Required
One Semester      Grade 12
This course will review the basic moral principles contained in the sophomore course on fundamental morality and will expand the student's view of the moral problems which will confront him/her as a mature human being. This course will take up the Christian vision of human sexuality and the problems of living it in the contemporary world. It will take up justice issues such as poverty, racism, war and peace, and enable the student to explain the Catholic vision on these important matters. It will conclude with a survey of the medical ethical issues confronting our society. It will give the student a basic grasp of the issues, a knowledge of the vocabulary, and the ability to articulate the Catholic solution to many of these issues. Church documents will be used as supplemental material.
