National Honor Society

The purpose of the National Honor Society was to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and to encourage the development of character in the nation's high school students.

Each member is required to demonstrate the following four characteristics:

  • Character

  • Scholarship

  • Leadership, and

  • Service

The Alleman Chapter of the National Honor Society received its chapter in 1954. During these past 63 years, over 1,250 Alleman students have met the high standards of membership in the National Honor Society.

As part of the service rendered to the community, Alleman NHS students prepare:

  • Senior Citizens Dinner

  • Sadie Hawkins Dance

  • May Crowning and Induction

NHS Selection & Dismissal Process

Eligibility
Students must be juniors or seniors who have completed at least one semester at Andrean High School to be eligible. Selection is then based on scholarship, service, character, and leadership.

Sophomores will be invited on a provisional basis but will not become full members until the end of their junior year.

Notification of Eligibility and Information Packets
In the spring, the NHS advisor sends out letters to all eligible students who have a 3.5 or higher cumulative, unrounded GPA. Students who are interested in joining must then complete an information packet detailing their activities that demonstrate their service, leadership, and character.

Students must turn in their information packets to the NHS chapter advisor by the deadline stated in the eligibility letter. Students who do not complete the packet and submit it on time will not be considered for admission to the chapter.

Faculty Evaluations
Upon receiving the student information packet, the faculty will evaluate the students for character, leadership and service as they observe it in their classrooms.

Faculty Selection Committee
Five faculty members will evaluate the students who have submitted the information packets by the deadline. The faculty council members will be selected for a term of one year only; however, they may be selected for consecutive terms. The chapter advisor will serve as non-voting members of the council.

The faculty council will use the information from student information packets and faculty evaluations and recommendations to select students who demonstrate outstanding character, service, and leadership. They will deliberate and then vote on each candidate individually based on this criteria.

Selection notification
After the faculty selection committee selects students for induction into the National Honor Society, the list of names is submitted to the principal. The principal then notifies students of selection or non-selection.

Eligible juniors who are not selected may continue to work to enhance their character, leadership, or service activities in order to try again the following year.

Appeals in cases of nonselection
Questions about nonselection may be addressed to the chapter advisor

Appeals must be addressed to the principal within 10 days of notification of nonselection. Appeals will be considered based upon proper adherence to the selection procedures.
