Remembering Max Grigsby: A Legacy of Music, Faith, and Service

Alleman High School and the Quad Cities music and band community, mourns the loss of beloved former band director Max Grigsby ’54, who passed away on June 11, 2026 at the age of 89. 

Serving as Alleman’s band director from 1961 to 1987, Max shaped generations of students through his passion for music, discipline, and encouragement. Beyond leading the Alleman band, he created and directed elementary school band programs throughout the Quad Cities, establishing a pipeline that introduced countless young musicians to a lifelong love of music. 

Former students remember Max as a demanding but deeply caring educator who taught far more than musical skills. Through his example, he instilled the values of hard work, respect, perseverance, and excellence. His influence extended well beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of hundreds of Alleman graduates. 

A proud Alleman alumnus, devoted husband to Marie for 66 years, loving father, grandfather, and man of deep faith, Max was known for his energy, generosity, and commitment to others. Whether teaching a student, helping a family member, or serving his community, he led with kindness and purpose.

Max Grigsby’s legacy lives on through the thousands of students he inspired, the music programs he built, and the values he passed on to generations of Pioneers. He will be remembered as a legendary educator, mentor, and faithful servant whose impact on Alleman will endure for years to come.
